Dr Stephen Best, 63, has stepped down as chairman of Glenavon FC following a recent health decline. The Lurgan Blues have appointed him as Honorary Chairman, acknowledging his 31-year tenure as club doctor and 11 months in his current role. Best confirmed his decision via the club’s website, citing chemotherapy treatment and the need to avoid crowded environments. He will attend games from the stands, potentially wearing a face mask, and described watching the team win as 'the best medicine.' Best, a lifelong Glenavon supporter and Lurgan native, previously served as club doctor until his retirement in 2024. His resignation comes after just over a year in the chairman role, which he assumed in July 2025. Lawrence Looney will take over as chairman, with Cathal Morrison and Frazer Follis serving as vice chairmen. Best’s transition marks the end of a 31-year association with the club, spanning both medical and administrative roles.
