Glenavon boss O'Connor previews top-of-table clash with Newington

Michael O'Connor says Glenavon's home match against leaders Newington is a key test, with the Lurgan Blues aiming to close a three-point gap in the promotion race.

This Saturday's key Boyle Sports Championship fixture sees Glenavon FC host league leaders Newington at Mourneview Park. Manager Michael O’Connor expects a stern examination from a side scoring freely at the top of the table.

Newington, managed by Declan O’Hara, are unbeaten after seven matches with five wins and two draws. They come off a remarkable 5-5 draw with Dundela last weekend, where Aaron Heaney netted a hat-trick. O’Connor has studied that performance closely.

Glenavon sit fifth in the Championship standings with 14 points from eight games. Their recent form reads two wins, two draws and a loss from the last five. A victory would close the three-point gap to the summit and boost their promotion credentials.

O’Connor remains positive about the season's prospects but acknowledged his side must be sharper. He pointed to a lack of attacking creativity in the recent 1-1 draw at Ballinamallard United.

Despite that, the manager took heart from a strong defensive display in the last meeting between the sides. Glenavon beat Newington Youth 1-0 just days ago.

Injury concerns persist ahead of the match. Midfielder Luke Cartwright is a fitness doubt with a slight calf problem and missed training earlier in the week. Striker Niall Quinn has also been managing a calf issue, typically feeling its effects after an hour of play.

The club has confirmed several matchday sponsors. A group of former directors are the main match sponsor, with Barry Craig sponsoring the match ball. The Spirit of 2014 Glenavon Supporters’ Club will present the Player of the Match award.

Hospitality will be provided by Park Avenue Takeaway at half-time in the Boardroom, while Skinny’s Pizza will supply post-match food for both teams. A bucket collection will be held to support Teen Challenge N.I., a charity assisting those with life-controlling problems including drug and alcohol issues.

In youth action, the Glenavon U-18s faced Ballinamallard United U-18s on Friday at Lurgan Junior High School. The U-16s were away to Cliftonville at Valley Leisure Centre on Saturday, while the U-15s hosted Larne at the same Lurgan 3G facility.

Following the Newington clash, Glenavon's first team turn their attention to a home game against Loughgall on Friday, September 25th.
